Introduction
Growing up, many of us heard stories about the “odd” man or woman down the street. Unfortunately for them and unknown to us at the time, it is very likely they were in some stage of Alzheimer’s disease.
Just after I graduated from high school my grandmother started getting confused and repeating herself over and over again. At first, we thought it was funny when grandma’s garage door kept going up and down for no reason. We knew she was mixing up the remotes for the TV and the garage door. Reality set in when we caught her with a screw driver going for the switchplate for the garage door. She hadn’t turned off the electric. We avoided what could have been a serious accident. Grandma knew better. Something was seriously wrong. It wasn’t long after that she was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. That was in the 1970s when not much was known about it, and treatment was limited.
As Boomers, we can be either the patient or the caregiver when it comes to Alzheimer’s disease.
